MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE

Life brings with it many traumas, physical, emotional and psychological, all of which impact on how the systems in our bodies  age and function year in and year out.

No system in our body works alone, and all systems are impacted by dysfunction in another. Our Lymphatic system is one of the hero’s of our bodies as it regulates our homeostasis (ideal internal environment) by removing waste products and transporting our all important immune cells to help us fight bacteria, viruses, inflammation, pathogens and many other threats to our body. Essentially, it supports the healthy functioning of all our other systems, and a fatigued or malfunctioning lymphatic system can have a disastrous effect on those other systems.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage helps to stimulate and support the lymphatic system, and by extension the effectiveness of all our body systems, through gentle, rhythmic movements that mimic the natural lymphatic flow. It helps to remove blockages and manage the buildup of fluid in affected areas of the body .

It is a gentle, relaxing therapy that also stimulates the parasympathetic system which manages the production of our ‘stress hormones’ thus helping our body to enter the ‘relax and repair’ state that supports our body’s ability to repair itself and reduce the impacts of stress. This can be of great benefit to anyone with a compromised nervous system, such as those living with anxiety.

The Lymphatic system is our front line of defence in promoting healthy recovery and is a valuable therapy for all:

-Anybody who regularly catches colds or flu’s or just generally feels unwell,

-anyone who takes a long time to recover from illness,

-anybody who is stressed or anxious

-anybody about to have surgery, or who has recently had surgery.

-Anybody undergoing chemotherapy, radiation or who has had surgery following a Cancer diagnosis, as this is a major contributor to a compromised lymphatic system.

-and most significantly,  anybody living with Lymphodema.

Benefits of this technique include:

-moving excess fluid along the correct channels for processing and elimination,

-assisting in managing lymphodema

-calming the nervous system,

-reducing pain and restoring balance,

-supporting the immune system.

Lymphodema Management

In conjunction with MLD, there are other strategies that can be used to manage lymphoedema. Tanya has been trained in promoting these techniques to support  you in managing your lymphodema. Please feel free to make a time to discuss these options with her.

Tanya does not currently offer bandaging or compression garment ordering.

Laser Therapy has been shown to improve the flow of lymph fluid through the affected area, reduce swelling and improve the health of the swollen tissue and reduce fibrosis. Reducing the swelling will lower your risk of infection, make movement easier and more comfortable, and improve your wellbeing.

Lymphatic Taping maybe a useful tool in some instances for helping direct the flow of lymph towards functioning nodes.

Lipodema

Lipodema is currently an under diagnosed disease almost entirely unique to women.

Lipodema is laying down of fat cells that are impacted by hormones, through the lower part of the body usually from the hips down and can be identified largely through the following symptoms:

-Painful to touch

-A disproportionately  larger lower body than upper body

-bruise easily

-heavy, aching tird legs

-a ‘cuffing’ at the ankles

-an inability to lose weight regardless of dieting or exercise.

-Is often simply written off as obesity

- any of the above changes occurring suddenly or significantly during periods of increased hormone activity such as puberty, childbirth, going on birthcontrol or menopause.

Lipodema can also present in the arms, and can be characterized by the same ‘cuffing’ at the wrist.

If you feel like you relate to any of the above, please make an appointment to meet with Tanya for further information.

Scar Tissue Management

Nearly everyone alive has a scar that marks an injury  at some point in our lives. Some are significant, others are small and easy to forget about, but all scar tissue has the capacity to impact how the surrounding tissues function and by extension our ability to move freely. Scar tissue looks vastly different on the inside of our bodies than it does externally, and  can ‘attach’ itself to surrounding structures, often causing pain, altered sensations such as burning, tingling, stabbing, numbness, pins and needles and freezing.

If you have been experiencing unexplained pain or restriction, its possible that pain or restriction is emanating from a scar somewhere on your body.

Often after just one treatment it is possible to notice a difference in the scar sensation or a ‘freeing up’ of restriction.

Regardless of how old a scar is, if you think Scar Therapy may benefit you, Tanya will be happy to assist.

BOWEN THERAPY

Bowen Therapy is a remedial body technique that works on the soft connective tissue (fascia) of the body.

The fascia is the part of the connective tissue that envelops, separate’s and influences every organ and tissue in the body and is shown to be the largest richest sensory organ in the body, therefore having a profound effect on the body’s physiology and function.

The Bowen Technique is safe to use on anyone from newborns to the frail elderly and for any musculoskeletal or related neurological complaint. It is a treatment that treats the whole person and aims to treat the cause of problems, rather than the symptoms.

You can also add some beautiful therapeutic oils to your Bowen Treatment to help relax you and your muscles and turn your treatment into an AromaBowen having the benefit of both the Bowen and the essential oils.
